Portland, Or.

Portland make a surprise trade heading into the draft sending their 13th overall pick to Denver and received former No 2 pick Julius Atherton. We sat down with the new GM and Portland point guard:

Julius welcome to Portland, are you happy to be here?

I am stoked to be here, I have been watching the talent that have come through this city and hope to revive my own career. Yoshida, Lawler, The Russian and to a lesser extent Dear who I look forward to playing with as guards to have come through Portland, let alone some of the big’s that have been here. I’m in a contract year so I am keen to make something happen permanently moving forward.

What I love was the fact that the GM and coach called me and as soon as the league had approved the trade. Outlined their reason for wanting me, asked where I wanted to be in my career by now and then on the spot outlined a plan on getting me there. What really reassured me was their promise to keep in the OBWL, every year now I have been moved between the D league and the pros, I’m very deflated each time. I hear the promises and what not and then nothing.

I intend on repaying my mate Roger for his faith, the Gm and coach and the city for allowing me to join.

Trent why the trade? there was some nice talent on the board at 13.

Yeah, we felt that Julius had a better fit for the team than some of the rookies, he has bounced around a little from the heights of a No 2 pick to a D league player, we can see past the surface level stats and see a player that will fit in with out style here without a blimp on the radar. Once Roger talked to us about him and the type of player he understood him to be from their time together during rookie games, the draft process and a few college engagements, we were sold. So we went and got the guy our franchise player wanted. Let’s see what happens now!

Well Julius we hope it works out for you and more importantly for us. We made the playoffs last year and pushed the pioneers to a game seven, we are keen for more of this success and would love for you to be a part of that.
