Portland, Or.

It’s been a big off season in Portland, lets recap:

The draft:

With the highest pick in Lumberjack history at number 2, GM Trent went with the athletic specimen in SF Marcel Bradley, maybe not as talented as Byron Dambrosio who went at number 1, Bradley fits a need at small forward with the loss of Starting SF and will get lots of minutes.

Second round selections of Brian Poteat and Gregory Thao will fill spots on the roster, but won’t see much game time.

FA:

The number one priority was to bring back Roger Desfontaines which they were able to do. The big centre will now be required to carry the burden of carrying this team back to some sense of relevance. With the big pay cheque, they will need to be big shoulders.

The lumberjacks also brought back one time Portland player in Dorian Geis. Geis’ last stay in Portland was a disaster, with a dose of humble pir now served to the former prodigy it is hoped that a return for Geis comes with a better attitude and less fouls.

Another player thrown a life line by the lumberjacks was youngster Ariel Stewart. After spending two years in Anaheim where many would say he performed mediocre at best, Ariel was given a lucrative offer by the lumberjacks, it is a two year contract with the second one with a team option so it was really a no risk punt by the lumberjacks. If he out performs the Russian, who is coming into a contract year, then he says, if not he is released and the Lumberjacks have lost nothing.

The rest of FA saw the Lumberjacks load up on min contract guys that will create competition for spots, nothing more.

The Lumberjacks are needing to manage their budget in the hopes of being ready for the next two FA when their big star Kendall Melanson hits the market.

Camps:

Camps were yet again kind to the Lumberjacks, the coaching staff really put in a heap of effort. With few loses and lots of gains the results should be seen throughout the season. Kendall once again went from strength to strength and is now the premier big man in Portland. Roger and Kendall should be a formidable partnership this next season.

Portland will be a young quick team and will look to exploit this youthfulness across the season. With the team increasing its winning amount each of the past six seasons, there is optimism in town that they can jump another run on the ladder and push for a 35 win haul, maybe not enough for a playoff spot, but enough to have team worried that we can stop them from getting there.
